Auto meters: committee formed to prepare tech specifications

A 13-member committee has been constituted to prepare technical specifications and standards for electronic digital fare meters with printer and GPS in autorickshaws plying in Chennai Metropolitan area, Tamil Nadu Transport Department told the Madras High Court today.

The department informed this to the first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam which had earlier issued a directive on a PIL by an autodrivers body claiming that no steps had been taken to procure the gadgets despite lapse of 10 months since government announced the decision to install digital metres with printers and GPS.

The department authorities, including the Transport Commissioner, submitted through the Government Pleader S T S Moorthy that the work of procurement of these meters has been entrusted to the state-run Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited.
 

The government also submitted in the court that for procurement electronic digital fare meters with printers, tenders were floated and the due date for opening of the tender has been extended to October seven and the tenders would be finalised within two months after that.

The bench recorded the submissions and disposed of the petition stating that the authorities shall remain bound by the time frame.
