City police sources said the arrest had been made yesterday on the basis of the woman's complaint to the local police station.
The woman, who is a divorcee and works as maid, in her complaint said that she and the auto-rickshaw driver Bapai Sarkar are neighbours.
She alleged that on Saturday night Sarkar had entered her house on some pretext and raped her.
After she told this to the local people in the area, they took her to police station to lodge a complaint and also helped police to arrest the culprit.
Later Sarkar was produced before a court in Alipore which remanded him to police custody.
