Autobiography of former and first female Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard describing her political and personal journey will be out next year, a media report has said.

According to Australian Associated Press, Gillard has confirmed that she was writing her memoirs which will be published by Random House.

The book is expected to be published in October 2014.

"I am very excited at having this opportunity to use my own words to describe my political and personal journey," the first female prime minister of Australia said in a statement.

"I want to distill for readers what I achieved, what drove me, where I erred, my personal resilience and how I coped. I want to share my perspective on the issues of our times and how I strove to make a difference for the better every day I had the privilege of serving as prime minister," she said.

She said she would also write about the future challenges for Australia.

Random House Australia publishing director Nikki Christer said there was much in Gillard's life and parliamentary legacy to be admired and debated.

"In any reckoning of her achievements, both before and after becoming prime minister, this book, written by her and told in her own words, will be essential," Christer said.
