An automated mechanism with a provision to store about 25,000 items having a combined load of 460 tons, was today inaugurated at the Naval Base here.
The newly installed Multi-aisle Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) was inaugurated by Flag Officer Commanding-In-Chief, Southern Naval Command, Vice Admiral A R Karve on the occasion of 65th anniversary of the Material Organisation (MO).
The Material Organisation of Southern Naval Command was established on September 24, 1951 which today, with an inventory exceeding two lakh items, provides equipment and spares to all units (Ships /aircraft and shore offices) under the command as well as to all aviation units in the Navy.

Availability of ASRS would assist in enhancing the speed of locating and delivery of store items in times of urgent need, a Navy release said.
MO (Kochi) was actively involved in providing succour to Sri Lanka post Cyclone Rounu recently, by supplying three truckloads of required relief material overnight which was subsequently shipped by naval warships to Sri Lanka, it added.
