Several autorickshaw drivers today staged a protest outside Kashmiri Gate police station in north Delhi demanding release of an auto driver who was taken into custody after the vehicle driven by him was allegedly looted by goons.

The protesters under the banner of Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh reached the police station around 10 AM and raised slogans against the police.

"Avdhesh Sahani used to drive an auto on a daily basis after renting it. On Sunday night, three unidentified youths, sat in his auto posing as passengers and when they reached near Chandergram Akhada they overpowered him and threw him out and fled with the auto," said Rishipal Singh, president of Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh

Instead of booking the main culprits, police allegedly booked him in connection with the case and took him into custody, he alleged.

Singh also accused police of trying to implicate Sahani while adding that even the owner of the auto has told police that he is innocent.

Staff at Kashmiri Gate police station tried to pacify the auto drivers, but they refused to budge.

Senior Delhi Police officials later intervened in the matter and assured them of proper investigation after which, they called off their protest.
