The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory in view of foggy weather today, asking motorists to avoid speeding and using high-beam headlights and to turn off mobile phones while driving to reduce distractions.

The advisory has asked the motorists to check weather forecasts before starting a trip and in case there is a fog warning, the trip should be delayed.

"If you are caught driving in fog, slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions. Make sure the full lighting system of your vehicle is turned on," the advisory said.

It also stated that instead of using high-beam headlights that reflect off the moisture droplets in the fog, one should use lowbeam headlights.

In addition to low-beam headlights, motorists can also use fog lights if they exist in the vehicle. Drivers have been advised against changing lanes abruptly.

Drivers have been asked to "reduce the distractions" in their vehicle. These include an advice to turn off cell phones and not listening to music.

Drivers have been advised to pull off the roads in case there is dense fog.

"If the fog is too dense to continue, pull completely off the road and try to position your vehicle in a safe parking area. Turn on your emergency flashers, in addition to keeping on your low-beam headlights," it added.

It also asked the drivers to refrain from stopping on the "travelled portion" of the road to avoid a "chain-reaction collision".

"Don't speed up suddenly, even if the fog seems to be clearing. You could find yourself suddenly back in fog. Don't speed up to pass a vehicle moving slowly or to get away from a vehicle that is following too closely," it added.
