West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today called for increased awareness for early detection of cancer.

"The increasing number of cancer patients are causing anxiety but early detection of the disease ensures successful treatment. Many types of cancer are curable and preventable if detected at an early stage," Tripathi said at awareness programme organised by the Indian Cancer Society here.

He said death rates were high due to lack of timely treatment of cancer.

Calling for an integrated approach to healthy living to fight cancer, the Governor said lack of physical activity and consumption of tobacco aggravate the situation.

Around three lakh people are estimated to die in India each year due to cancer.
