Minister Jitendra Awhad's official Twitter account on Tuesday falsely claimed that the state cabinet has decided to keep all government offices closed for the next seven days in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

The NCP leader apologised for the gaffe which he blamed on his media account holder.

The housing minister later deleted the post, which was quickly lapped up by the media, saying his media account holder "misused" his account and tweeted the "false information creating misunderstanding and chaos".

He also said the account holder will be "punished".

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who addressed reporters after the cabinet meeting here, clarified that the government offices will not be kept closed.

"The state government has taken a big and important step to contain spread of coronavirus. The decision to keep all govt offices closed over the next seven days was taken during the state cabinet meeting today," Awhad said in the post which he deleted after sometime.

In another tweet, the NCP minister added, "My media account holder tweeted false information creating misunderstanding and chaos.. i was unaware till the time I was called by media...I m feeling sorry... my account holder has misused my account and will be punished.
