The Baale Muhurta, which is the first of the preliminaries before the next Paryaya festival, was held at the Palimar Math at Udupi near here today.

Shri Vidyadeesha Theertha Swamiji would be ascending the Paryaya Peetha at the 800-year old Sree Krishna Math and temple on January 2018, Math authorities said.

It would be his second Paryaya.

It is the tradition to perform the four Muhurtas, namely Baale (banana) Muhurta, Akki (rice) Muhurta, Kattige (firewood) and Bhatta (paddy) Muhurta, a year prior to the Paryaya ascension.

Plantain saplings are planted by the Swamiji during the Baale Muhurta. This is believed to be done to ensure plentiful supply of plantain leaves, which are used for 'Anna Dana' at the Math.

Earlier the Swamiji offered Pooja to Lord Ganapathi, Lord Mukhyaprana and Sri Madhwacharya, and offered prayers at Anantheshwara and Lord Chandramauleshwara Temples.

Another Pre-Paryaya ritual, 'Akki Muhurtha' would be performed onJanuary 20, 2017, the sources said.

The Paryaya festival marks the change of authority to manage the Sri Krishna Math and the Temple.
