William Winans, who celebrated his first birthday yesterday, was treated for bites and bruise marks and is doing well, said his father, Devin Winans.

"If the snake had wrapped around his neck, honestly, we probably would not be having his birthday today," Winans said.

On Monday evening, Winans said he heard his son crying and went to check on him. When he reached into William's crib he said he felt something "slimy."

"I immediately turned the light on and saw the snake, a ball python wrapped around his foot, constricting it and trying to eat his foot," Winans was quoted as saying by ABC News.

Winans used a blanket to remove the snake from his son's foot and turned the animal over to the Animal Shelter in Coles County.

Police say the reptile somehow slithered away from its home next door. They have issued its owner a citation, the report said.
