A month-old girl was found abandoned in bushes along the roadside in Tuni area of Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district, police said today.

A local labourer heard the wails of the infant and spotted her lying in the bushes while he was passing through the Kondavaripeta area in Tuni town at around midnight yesterday, police sub-inspector James Ratna Prasad said.

He immediately informed the police who rushed to the spot and rescued the baby who had minor injuries on her body, he said.

The baby was later handed over to the woman and child welfare officer at Kakinada who took her to Government General Hospital for a check-up in the early hours today, he said.

It is suspected that the baby was left in the bushes around 2-3 hours before it was spotted, Prasad said adding that 4-5 police teams have been deployed to search for her parents.
