Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today called upon officials to function in a cohesive and sensitive manner to tackle the present situation arising out of frequent incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in the state.

Addressing a meeting of the top brass of civil and police administrations at Punjab Bhawan here this evening, Badal asked officials to ensure synergy in day-to-day functioning to win over the confidence of the people, especially in the wake of tension and violence over frequent sacrilegious incidents.

The meeting was attended by divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, IGs, DIGs and SSPs among others.

Badal asked the officers to deal with this piquant situation which, unlike of normal crime, was of typical religious in nature, fanned by political rivals to exploit the situation to their vested interests thereby stirring up communal tension in the state.

He said the current situation warranted utmost sensitivity.

The Chief Minister reiterated his firm commitment that no one would be allowed to disturb the hard earned peace, communal harmony, amity and brotherhood in the state and assured that the state government would extend all possible help and cooperation to the civil and police administrations to tackle this situation efficaciously.

He asked the DGP to hold regular meetings with senior police officers posted in the field to get feedback and inputs from them to confront the present crisis, which was probably more serious in nature than of those during the black days of militancy.

At the same time, the Chief Minister also underscored the need for such meetings to be convened at his level at least once in three months to take stock of law & order situation in a wider perspective.

Stressing the need for dispensation of quick justice to the people, the Chief Minister asked the civil as well as police officers to be sincere and honest in their efforts so that justice is delivered to the general public without any harassment or exploitation.
