Addressing a demonstration to protest the hike in power tariff and imposition of additional surcharge on sugar and mobile handsets, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committe President Amarinder Singh said that the state government was "bankrupt" and now it had started imposing taxes on the people to generate revenue.

"This is not the right way to generate revenue as such punitive taxes can only cripple the economy and not strengthen it. To add to it, the cash-starved government is planning to further impose taxes to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore on the state in the coming months," Singh said.

Led by Singh, Congress workers from across the state staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here.

Addressing mediapersons later, Singh also presented a list of "victims of Akali and police vendetta" in the assembly segments of Majithia and Dera Baba Nanak.

"We have proof to show that people are being victimised by the kith and kin of Akali leaders and the perpetrators are being let off scot-free," Singh said.
