The three policemen, including the SHO of Kotwali police station, Amritlal, have been suspended with immediate effect, IGP Devendra Singh Chauhan told reporters here.

He said the medical examination of the victim confirmed rape and the trio has been suspended on charge of laxity.

"The girl should have been handed over to the women police, but it was not done," he said.

Two police recruits and as many police personnel have already been arrested in connection with the incident.

The IG said that along with legal action, departmental action would also be taken against the accused and SP Piyush Kumar Srivastava has been named as inquiry officer.

The 17-year-old girl, hailing from Rampur district, had come to offer prayers at a tomb along with her grandfather on Sunday when they were allegedly picked up by a team of Lalpul police on patrol duty.

The duo was taken to Lalpul outpost, where the girl was allegedly raped.
