The occupants of the other car opened indiscriminate fire on Dheerpal. But, as he tried to speed off, two persons in another car tried to block Dheerpal's way.
More than 15 rounds were fired at Dheerpal who, however, escaped unhurt although his car was riddled with bullets.
"The shooters then abandoned their car and escaped," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
On Thursday, a police team was tipped off about some persons wanted in connection with the said case who were supposed to be near Balaji Mandir.
A trap was thereafter laid and the trio, who were sitting inside an SUV, were surrounded and overpowered.
The accused were subjected to a thorough interrogation upon which they spoke about an impending gang war between the Manoj Morkheri and Sandeep Badwasni gangs, police said.
Police learnt that one Dinesh, alias Gabchu, a member of the Badwasni gang, was shot dead in 2012 by Morkheri's henchmen, among whom were Dheerpal and one Vikas Langarpuria.
Badwasni then decided to eliminate Dheerpal to avenge the killing of Dinesh.
Efforts are being made to nab other criminals involved in the attempt to murder and the investigation was on in the case, police added.
