Congress today appealed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court to take suo motu cognisance of media reports about 'photo copying' of ballot papers for panchayat elections in Jalandhar and demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter.

Expressing shock over the reports, Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa said in a statement here that the entire process of panchayat elections was a "sham" and only judicial intervention can save the process.

Ballot papers should be printed at security press with proper numbering, but the SAD-BJP government has hijacked the whole election process, he said.

Bajwa alleged that State Election Commissioner S S Brar had failed to perform his duties and was playing in the hands of the ruling alliance and said, if ballot papers were not printed on time, elections must be postponed.

Brar was unavailable for comments.
