Congress today flayed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for allegedly playing politics and appeasing radical elements over setting up of a martyrs memorial in Golden Temple complex, to meet his narrow ends.

Addressing a press conference here, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa warned against dangerous designs of SAD and said the memorial is aimed at misleading and provoking sentiments of the Sikh community.

He asked Badal to set up a 'peace memorial' instead, in memory of 33,000 innocent people who lost their lives to terrorism.

Badal had given an undertaking in the Assembly that the upcoming martyrs memorial will be a simple Gurdwara and no specific references will be linked to it, Bajwa said.

Demanding deployment of central forces during Panchayat elections from the State Election Commission, he said free and fair elections are not possible under present circumstances.

Citing incidents of the murder of Youth Congress leader Sukhraj Singh Bhagupur in Patti and attack on Congress MLA Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi in Ferozepur, Bajwa also alleged that Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was using the police to terrorise Congress workers.
