Punjab Congress Chief Partap Singh Bajwa today expressed grief and concern over suicide by an unemployed lineman Sarabjit Singh at Tarn Taran and blamed the SAD-BJP government for not addressing the problem of unemployed youth in the state.
Addressing a meeting of workers here, Bajwa said this was the second incident in the past one month when an unemployed youth had ended his life in helplessness.
Earlier, Jaswinder Singh, a veterinary pharmacist in Bathinda had committed suicide under similar circumstances, he said and added, Sarabjit Singh was among the jobless linemen who met Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at Chandigarh last week, but Badal didn't pay any heed to their demands.
Non-governance, corruption and vested interests of the Badal family were responsible for suicides by unemployed youth and farmers in the state, he said.
The PPCC chief demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to every unemployed youth who committed suicide and suitable jobs for their kin and said, if immediate solution to problem of unemployment was not found, it will trigger a spate of suicides.
Bajwa said Congress has started its campaign to mobilise unemployed youth and party MLAs would enrol at least 1,000 unemployed youth with employment exchanges by the end of August.
Congress would approach the court against false promises made by SAD-BJP government with the youth, he said, condemning the state government's move to charge hefty fees for regularising unauthorised colonies.
