Congress today demanded holding of student union elections in the colleges and universities of Punjab to inculcate political wisdom in the youth and to prepare future leaders.

State Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa said this while addressing members of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) here before flagging off the 'Adhikar Yatra' launched from Jallianwala Bagh under the leadership of Vikarmjeet Singh Chaudhary, PYC president.

Student elections were not held in Punjab for the past 30 years, though the Supreme Court in 2006 had ordered to hold them in colleges within the next five years across the country, he alleged.

While Panjab University, Chandigarh has started student union elections, the Punjab government has not taken any decision so far, Bajwa said.

Stressing that student union elections would strengthen the democracy in the state, he called upon the youth to play a pro-active role in politics and to make democracy more vibrant.

Bajwa also asked the youth to fight the drug menace in Punjab.
