The municipal bypolls results for Ballimaran came out rather delayed today but it was a shot in the arm for AAP, in a ward where the campaign was driven by water, sanitation and other 'aam aadmi' issues.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party has its task cut out as the people of this Old Delhi area have long been waiting for their civic woes to be addressed.

Results of 12 of the 13 wards that went to polls on May 15 were announced in quick succession, putting the tally at AAP - 4, Congress - 4, BJP - 3 and Independent -1.

In Ballimaran, AAP's Mohd Sadiq was leading and eventually

secured a victory against his BJP rival, helping the party clinch the highest number of seats in the bypoll.

57.63 per cent of the 28,448 registered voters in this ward had voted on the polling day. The area had an "ultra- sensitive" polling station and nearly 200 police personnel had been deployed.

Famous as the place where Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib died in 19th century, the area, like the rest of Old Delhi, lacks proper drainage and sanitation.

Ballimaran sits in an eponymous Assembly constituency and its sitting MLA Imran Hussain is from AAP. Hussain had won this seat as an RLD councillor in 2012 MCD polls.

During his campaign Sadiq, who happens to be Husain's brother-in-law, had promised to continue "the good work done by his predecessor".
