In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the senior BJP leader said, "It is a high time for the government to wake up and restore confidence in the minds of train passengers."

Expressing shock and dismay over the loss of lives in the fire that broke out in a sleeper class compartment of Chennai- bound Tamil Nadu Express near Nellore, he said no additional allocation was made in the SRSF, established by the erstwhile NDA government, even as four train fire accidents have taken place in the last two years.

He said the government should implement modern technology, including smoke detection equipment, fire proof coaches and anti-collision devices to avert the mishaps.
