Bangladesh's international cricketer Shahadat Hossain's wife, absconding for about a month, was arrested here today over allegations of beating and torturing their 11-year-old maid.

Hossain, 29, and his wife Nritto Shahadat were last month accused of torturing their maid and a case was ladged against them under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Nrittya Shahadat from one of her relative's house, Syed Kaiyumuzzaman Khan, deputy commissioner (Mirpur Zone), told The Daily Star.

"We are trying hard to arrest Shahadat," he said.

On September 6, the maid, Mahfuza Akhtar Happy, brought allegations of torture by Shahadat and his wife.

A week later, the cricketer was suspended as police raided his house after officers found the injured and crying maid on a street Dhaka.

The minor girl was later rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Shahadat had also filed a complaint with the Mirpur police that the maid had gone missing.

Th paceman has played 38 Tests and 51 one-day internationals for Bangladesh.
