The officer, Sitaram Raikwar, is posted in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch near the railway station here.

Raikwar had demanded a bribe of Rs 19,000 from a farmer, Abhiram Yadav, a resident of Behdi village, for sanctioning a loan of Rs 2 lakh, CBI sources said.

He lodged a complaint with the CBI, which laid a trap and caught Sakku Yadav, the middleman who accepted the bribe on behalf of the Manager, in Amla town near here, they said.

CBI sleuths then took the middleman to Betul Railway Station canteen where he handed over the amount to Raikwar, who was immediately caught by the Central agency, they said.

Of Rs 19,000, the Manager's share was Rs 18,000 while the middleman was supposed to get Rs 1,000 as his commission, the sources said.

CBI took both of them in custody and will produce the duo before a Special Court in Bhopal tomorrow. PTI COR MAS RSY VMN
