Normal banking operation in Tripura was affected today as public sector bank employees went on a day's strike to protest against government's proposed consolidation move, a union spokesman said.

The Joint Convener of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), Swapan Modak, said that 450 branches of 27 nationalised banks, including Tripura Gramin Bank and State Cooperative Bank, were closed on account of the strike.

He said that the strike was called mainly to protest against privatisation of the nationalized banks and consolidation in the Indian banking sector by the central government.
