Two days after a security guard at an ATM was strangulated to death here, police today asked all banks to take more measures including hiring of armed guards and installing CCTV cameras to prevent ATM robbery incidents.

Police said around 80 ATMs in the city are without security guards.

Commissioner of Police Ajay Singhal said seven incidents of stealing money from ATMs or attempts to do so have been reported in Ambala district last year.

The modus operandi of the criminals has been to target those ATMs which do not have any security arrangement, he said, adding that police identified three gangs involved in looting ATMs in Haryana and neighbouring districts of Punjab.

Meanwhile, DCP Ambala (Urban) Rahul Sharma said banks have been directed to fit hooters in ATM centres and put CCTV cameras in working condition.
