Five alleged drug peddlers were arrested and a large quantity of banned drugs was seized in the tourist hub of Nishat along the banks of Dal Lake here today, police said.
The success was achieved when a police party intercepted a drug peddler during patrolling at Doodh Mohalla locality of Nishat, 11 kms from here, a police spokesman said.
"During routine patrolling, a police party noticed a person who was moving suspiciously and tried to escape leaving behind a box. The person was chased and was arrested," he said, adding, he was identified as Ghulam Jeelani Shah.

The box was seized and a large number of codine phosphate bottles and strips of spasmo-proxyvon were recovered from it, the spokesman said, adding, his questioning revealed that he was working as a drug peddler and identified some more persons involved in selling illegal drugs to the youth.
"Several places were raided at his disclosure which led to the arrest of four more persons and recovery of a haul of illicit drugs including 551 bottles of codine phosphate and 197 strips of sposmo proxyon," the spokesman added.
He said a case under NDPS Act was registered and further investigations are on.
