Banned oxen race stopped by police

Press Trust of India
: The banned oxen race of 'Kaalapootu' in Kerala was stopped by police just as it was about to be held at Edappal in the district today.

Police said they reached the spot this afternoon and gave a stop memo issued by the District Collector to "Kaalapoottu Facilitation Committee", which had made all arrangements to conduct the race, following which the event was stopped.

They said a case had been registered against the land owner under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code for allowing the race to be held.

In September, 2015, a division bench of Kerala High Court had upheld a single judge's ruling that "Kaalapoottu" should be treated akin to "Jallikattu".

It had also held that "Kalapoottu" falls within the purview of the ban imposed by the Supreme Court.
