The Bar Council of India today declared the proposed meeting of some lawyers at Thanjavur on October 11 as "illegal" and warned of action against any advocate for creating "unrest" among Bar members in the state.

"The council declares such meeting to be illegal and any advocate found taking part in any such meeting shall be dealt with for gross professional misconduct and for creating unrest among members of the Bar in Tamil Nadu," the BCI announced in its warning.

On its part the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, issued show-cause notice to another batch of 19 lawyers for having participated in a rally and meeting in Madurai on September 10.

"You are called upon to offer your explanation as to why disciplinary action shall not be initiated against you for your misconduct under Section 35 of Advocates At, 1961 within 15 days from the date of receipt of this notice, failing which it will be presumed that there is no explanation to offer on your part and necessary action will be initiated as per law," the notice said.

On September 22, BCI suspended 14 lawyers from practicing before any court or tribunal for their August 2015 meeting and anti-helmet procession in Madurai.

On its directive, the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry issued show-cause notices to seven of its sitting members for having participated in a protest at Tiruchirappali and another set of lawyers who had occupied Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul's court hall for an entire day on September 14.
