The prime accused in the July 8 shootout at a city bar, in which one bystander was killed and two others injured, was allegedly attacked by his cell inmates at Alipore Central Jail, police said today.

The incident happened late last night when the main accused, Nanty, was attacked by the inmates, including his one-time friend Gyansagar Sharma, inside the cell of the Kolkata Jail, police sources said.

The police arrived and rescued Nanty after the other inmates started screaming during the incident, they said.

He was later transferred to a different cell, a source at the jail said, adding that Nanty was not injured in the attack.

On whether any step has been taken against Sharma, they said, "No decision has been taken, but we are looking into it".

Nanty and six others were arrested in connection with the shootout. On the night of July 8, the bar authorities got into an argument with seven to eight unidentified persons after they refused to pay for the services. They had left and returned within a few minutes with around 20 people and opened fire killing the bystander.

Meanwhile, Gyansagar Sharma was arrested one-and-a-half years back from Sonarpur after police recovered a skeleton along with arms and ammunition from his residence.
