Baramati senior inspector held for gambling in raid on club

A senior police inspector of Baramati police station was among 41 people who were detained in a midnight raid at a rummy and poker club in Mundhwa area here yesterday.

Police said that the club, which has a poker and rummy licence, was allowing a three-card game, the latter classified as gambling.

A raid was conducted by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Pravin Mundhe and cash worth approximately Rs seven lakh were recovered from the club at Kapila Matrix Hotel.

"We received a tip-off that the club, which has only poker and rummy license, is allowing the three card game, which is a gambling activity, on their premise. Acting on a tip-off, we raided the place under the guidance of additional commissioner of police Ravindra Sengaonkar and detained 41 people found playing the three-card game," said Mundhe.
 

He said that senior police inspector Vijay Jadhav of Baramati city police station among the 41 people.

"We have detained them and the process of registering a case against all these people under the relevant sections of gambling activities is going on," said Mundhe.

He added that they also found cigarette brands which are not allowed to be sold in India. "We are also thinking of slamming relevant sections of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003," he said.
