/ -- Support group meetings play a very important role after any Bariatric Surgery. Support group meetings need to be informative, get people involved and at the same time should create a value and play a role in the weight loss journey of an operated patient. At 'Aastha Health Care', Support Group meetings have been organised month after month to support our patients post Bariatric Surgery. This time, Support group meeting theme was a Trek, an outdoor physical activity, to go through the rough terrains, to go uphill on a Sunday morning. Usually, trek is done by professionals or by those who would like to experience this as a picnic, but for those who could not walk a few steps without being breathless because of obesity, it was a challenge. This challenge was well accepted by almost 125 of our operated Bariatric Surgery patients and accomplished with finesse and determination.

Obesity is a debilitating disease with much impact on physical, medical and mental status of an individual. Obesity being a disease, has to be treated in stages and these stages are determined by BMI i.e Body Mass Index. Obesity in initial stages can always be controlled with diet and exercise, but when level of obesity increases, treatment options become limited. Higher BMIs more than 30 are candidates for Bariatric Surgery. Bariatric Surgery, unlike any other surgery needs cooperation from patient, family support and more importantly support from the operating Bariatric Surgeon and his team to ensure the best results. This support from Bariatric Surgery team can be in terms of counselling, regular motivation and Support group meetings to ensure patients get the much needed push and motivation to keep doing well for a long period of time.

After the tremendous success of Navratri celebrations as the last Support group, the December meet was on the concept of a Bariatric Support group Trek, a unique initiative of 'Aastha Health Care'. Says Dr Manish Motwani, Bariatric Surgeon at 'Aastha Health Care', "We keep looking out for innovative ideas for our support group meetings so as keep the patient motivated to come and take benefit from these meetings. Sometimes, there are talks on skin, hair, glow, physical training, vitamin requirements and other times, we try to get patients involved in physical activities so that they can get the confidence to perform better and for them to realise their potential."
