Barring 41 shops, all have paid arrears, TN govt informs HC

The Tamil Nadu government today informed the Madras High Court that barring 41 shops out of 729, all had paid property tax arrears to Chennai corporation within a day of the court directing sealing of all the 729 shops at Koyembedu market here over non-payment of arrears.

Additional Advocate General furnished a statement to this effect before Justice N.Kirubakaran.

Justice N.Kiribakaran, who recorded the statement, said the Additional Advocate General Manishankar has submitted that of 729 shops except 41 shops, all others paid arrears of Rs.1,68,80,000 within a day from the date of the order passed by the court and the amount has been collected by officials.
 

The AAG requests some more time to collect the balance amount, the judge said and posted the matter for further hearing to July 27.

The court had on July 18 directed the Corporation of Chennai to seal all the 729 shops in Koyembedu market here over non-payment of even non-revised property tax till date.

Justice Kirubakaran passed the interim order on a writ petition by Kulasekaran and R Padmanabhan, two shop owners at the market.
