Bawana bypoll: 1,413 votes cast under NOTA category

As many as 1,413 votes were polled under the 'none of the above' category in the Bawana Assembly bypoll in Delhi.

In the final tally, after 28 rounds of counting, NOTA was after the three main contenders from the AAP, the Congress, and the BJP.

Of the total 1,31,950 votes polled, the AAP cornered 59,886 (45.4 per cent), BJP 35,834 (27.2) and Congress 31,919 (24.2 per cent).

The vote share under the NOTA category stood at 1.1 per cent, according to officials at the office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

Eight candidates, including three Independents, were in the fray for the high-stakes bypoll which was held on August 23.
 

The turnout was a meagre 45 per cent.

Independent candidates Satpal Singh, Sumesh and Umesh Kumar got 961, 786 and 185 votes, respectively, while SP's Kalu and Rashtriya Janta Congress's Banwari Lal received paltry 834 and 132 votes, respectively, all falling below the NOTA share.

The counting, which was held at a college in Alipur in north-west Delhi, began at 8 am today. A total of 28 rounds were held for the exercise carried out by the office of the Delhi CEO.

Electronic voting machines equipped with VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) were used in all polling stations for the first time in this constituency.

There are 2.94 lakh voters in Bawana -- 1,64,114 males, 1,30,143 females and 25 third gender voters. Voting was held peacefully in 379 polling stations across the Assembly constituency.

With today's win, the AAP now has 66 MLAs in the 70- member Delhi Assembly, the rest four of the BJP, as the Congress again drew a blank.
