Beas tragedy: AIU members to meet Virbhadra Singh

Concerned over the drowning of 24 students in Beas river in Himachal Pradesh, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) will suggest measures to avoid such incidents to the state Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

In this regard, the varsities body has constituted a committee, members of which will meet Virbhadra Singh soon, a statement issued today said.

The governing council of AIU, which met on June 10 to condole the death of students from Hyderabad, has suggested that the Himachal government take measures adopted by Andhra Pradesh and Odisha governments during cyclone to avoid loss of life.

President of the Association, Rajendra B Lal said they were of the view that as tourism is the main stay of HP, the government should take effective measures such as putting up warning signage and information to tourists about impending danger.
 

AIU also said that they will write to the Human Recource Development minsiter and Vice-Chancellor of the University conveying the sentiments of the members.

About 60 students and faculty members of Hyderabad's VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology were on an excursion to Manali on Sunday evening when 25 members of the group, mostly students, were washed away in flash floods following the sudden release of water from the reservoir of the Larji hydro-power project.

Rescuers have so far recovered eight bodies in the last four days, while the fate of sixteen students and a co-tour leader is still unknown.

Fifteen divers of the Navy joined the rescue team and an unmanned aerial vehicle has also been deployed to accelerate the search operations.
