An electric guitar played by Beatle legends John Lennon and George Harrison has been sold for USD 408,000 at an auction.

The instrument was custom-built for Lennon in 1966, reported Contactmusic.

It was sold to an American buyer at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.

The sale was organised by the Beverly Hills-based firm Julien's Auctions.

The guitar manufactured by VOX company, was used by the late rockers at the height of their popularity.

Harrison played the guitar as he rehearsed for his 1967 song 'I Am The Walrus'. While Lennon played it during a video session for 'Hello, Goodbye'.

Lennon later handed over the guitar to his friend and electronics engineer Yanni 'Magic Alex' Mardas as a gift in 1967.
