Shortage of beds is taking its toll on the MD/MS courses at Ram Manohar Lohia Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research where only 60 per cent of the total sanctioned seats have been filled.
According to the annual report of the institute, the government has permitted the institute to induct total 96 MD/MS students in 13 various departments.
However, as of now, the actual number of students pursuing MD/MS courses is only 64 against the total permitted strength of 96 seats, according to the annual report.
"We were not able to fill all the seats during the current session owing to inadequate bed strength, which should be in proportion to the PG seats.It is correct that the government has allowed us to admit 96 PG students.
"But due to shortage of beds, the seat strength was reduced by the university concerned during inspection before the admissions," said Dr HK Kar, Director-cum-Medical Superintendent of the institute.
Dr Kar, however, said the institute would admit students against all the seats in the coming session as more number of beds would be shortly added.
"We are short of around 170 beds, which we are soon going to add into existing infrastructure.As the bed strength would be adequate by next 1-2 months, we would be able to fill all the permitted seats in the upcoming session", Dr Kar added.
Whereas seat occupancy in departments of ENT and Dermatology (skin) is equal to or less than half, worst is the case of branches like Microbiology and Psychiatry, where not even a single seat is filled against permitted strength of 5 and 3 seats, respectively.
Same is the case with department of Pathology, where actual number of MD students is three against the permitted strength of nine seats.
The scenario is equally compromised for the super-speciality (DM/McH) courses, where the institute could induct only 12 students against the the total permitted 25 seats.
The institute is offering super-speciality courses in seven various branches including Nephrology, Paediatrics Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Cardiology and Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery.
The institute had started offering PG courses in year 2008-09.
Beginning with 28 PG seats and 2 seats in PG Super-Speciality courses, the institute now has 101 seats of PG degree diploma courses and 25 seats for super-speciality courses permitted by the government of India.
The institute is affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
