Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi Thursday pitched for introduction of 'no helmet no petrol' system in the Union Territory by taking a cue from Bengaluru.

In a Whatsapp message to media, the former IPS officer lauded the adoption of the slogan from August 5 in Bengaluru andsaid "what Bengaluru is doing needs to be done nationally."

People should also abide by the law and the petrol pumps here could play a key role, she said.

Noting that she had tried her best to enforce the helmet rule in Puducherry, she said, "Puducherry is a small place. Law enforcement is easiest provided there is political will behind it and there is no contrary orders as had happened every time on helmet wearing."

"Government in power ought not to play politics on road safety and safety of lives," she said adding "political leadership should show the way and promote rule of lawwithout issuing contrary messages."

It may be recalled that Puducherry had come out with specific notifications on compulsory wearing of helmets by two wheeler riders.

The Lt Governor had issued instructions asking the two wheeler riders to use helmets.

The helmet wearing initiative of Bedi however met with protests and traffic police personnel were asked to go slow on implementation of the rule.
