Bedi directs civic officials to prepare plan to desilt water

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today directed the civic authorities here to evolve an integrated plan to desilt water bodies particularly ponds in rural areas of the Union Territory.

The former IPS officer, during her weekend visit to Moolakulam block inspected a pond there and directed the Commissioner of Oulgaret Municipality to desilt it along with other water bodies by utilising funds available from financial institutions and centrally-sponsored schemes.

A release from her office said the pond has not been desilted in a long time and left open for breeding of mosquitoes, poisonous reptiles.

Bedi also instructed the officials of the department of Agriculture to revive the market and utilise the buildings, lying in disuse.
 

She later visited the Thengaithittu coastal village and listened to the grievances of fishermen, the release said.
