Bedi directs demolition of dilapidated vacant staff quarters

: Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today issued on the spot orders to PWD to demolish the dilapidated vacant government staff quarters in neighbouring Lawspet after pedalling through the entire area to see their poor condition.

A release from the Lt Governor's office said Bedi pedalled through the quarters covering all blocks to see for herself the poor maintenance.

Asking the PWD Chief Engineer to earmark separate funds to maintain the quarters, Bedi also directed that the PWD Junior Engineer be available from 10 AM to 12 noon on all working days to receive complaints from residents.

Addressing residents of the quarters at a meeting, she suggested that a Residents Welfare Association be formed with the patrons being the Revenue minister, elected from Lawspet, and Secretary to Lt Governor.
 

She said the residents should volunteer to clean the complex and added that a drive against garbage would be launched on December 17.

The Lt Governor also asked the residents to become aware of segregation of solid waste at source.

The release said Bedi also directed that the helipad in the neighbourhood of the residential colonybe spruced up and a cricket pitch developed to help students to play.

Other suggestions for a face lift to the quarters included filling potholes, construction of community toilets and regular patrolling in the locality.

The release said Bedi directed that the Housing Board's shopping complex, which was remaining unused for the last 20 years, be let out to the Labour Department on lease to run a Skill Development Centre.

Secretary to Lt Governor G Theva Needhi Dhas,PWD Chief Engineer C Swaminathan and Conservator of Forests G Kumar were among senior officials who accompanied Bedi on bicycles during her visit to the quarters.
