Press Trust of India Puducherry
Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today held a meeting at the Police Training School here to roll out steps to prevent crimes as also to check organised 'violent crimes' in the union territory.

Bedi, a former IPS officer, in a release said that during the meeting she had with police officers that was basically meant to review the crime prevention strategy in Puducherry, she issued standing instructions to the DGP and his key supervising officers which she wanted the police officers to follow strictly.

The instructions were based on recent incidents of violent crimes and also on the basis of surprise check made to a police station earlier in the day where she said she had detected crime records of rowdies being incomplete.

She said that she brought the deficient records to the attention of the DGP during the review meeting.

She felt that these records revealed an apparent weakness in the surveillance of professional criminals leading to organised violence.

She insisted that all the officers from the rank of DGP, IG of police and superintendents of police should start the day with a visit to a police station to meet with beat and other officers to brief and debrief them.

She felt that this would enable exchange of information and also help the officers know if the ranks are performing to the best of their ability.

She said that a close watch should be maintained and the SHOs should also update their own observations on the whereabouts of the criminals through beat and other staff to know if any of the criminals are active in crimes.
