Bedi joins with volunteers to plant saplings

Lt Governor Kiran Bedi along with about 300 volunteers today planted saplings on the banks of Velrampet lake here during her weekly visit of villages.

Members from different organisations, educational institutions, private hospitals, banks and commercial establishments participated in the event. This was her 100th weekly village visit programme as part of 'swachch Puducherry and prosperous and green Puducherry programme after she assumed office on May 29 last year

Kiran Bedi had been visiting villages on bicycles on most of the occasions accompanied by officers of Raj Nivas, Police and other departments.

The banks of the lake was found to be used for open defecationby the people and it was also used as an open dumping ground for the garbage.
 

The Lt Governor mobilised the staff and officers of various departments including the Municipality, PWD and Forests Department to undertake mass cleaning work and also desilting of the lake.

A Raj Nivas release said the voluntary organisations would look after the saplings in their respective demarcated areas on the bund.

Kiran Bedi later offered worship at the presiding deity of Thulukanathamman in the vicinity of the lake.
