Bedi wants lake to be protected

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today directed officials to protect the Kanakan Eri, a major water body on the city outskirts, from contamination.

On her 104th weekly visit to peripheral areas, Bedi asked the officials of PWD and Pollution Control Board to ensure that drainage water be diverted to a treatment plant.

Similarly, liquid medical wastes from government hospital in the lake's vicinity should not be discharged in the lake, she told the officials, a release from Bedi's office said.

It also stated that Bedi asked the officials of the Municipality of Oulgaret within whose jurisdiction the lake is situated to take steps to construct a toilet to prevent open defecation by the people.
 

She also asked the police officials to press into service special beat officers for patrolling in the evenings to prevent encroachment of miscreants.
