A protest was staged in front of the office of the Labour Commissioner's office here today by beedi workers demanding dearness allowance.
The protest was organised by the South Canara Beedi Workers Federation affiliated to the CITU demanding the DA which they said was due to them from January this year.
The beedi workers are eligible for an increase of Rs 21.15 per thousand beedies rolled with effect from January but no steps had been taken so far in this regard, said BM Bhat, district president of the CITU.
He also alleged that the Labour Department was not taking any action against the beedi firms which fail to pay minimum wages.
