Bees attacked at least 26 persons, including members of the Kerala Dam Safety Regulatory Authority and its chairman Justice T R Ramachandra Menon, here during an inspection of the lower Periyar Pambalam dam in Idukki district.

The incident occurred yesterday when the team was inspecting various dams in idukki following reports of water leakage.

The officials had to run for cover as Justice Menon's wife accidently came in contact with a bee hive as they were inspecting the dam.

Earth Sciences Studies Director N P Kurien and Dam safety Authority Chief Engineer K K Karpankutty were among those who were bitten badly.

Kurien was stung by 150 bees and has been hospitalised.
