Chinese capital Beijing's new international airport which is being build at a cost of USD 13.1 billion, will be able to handle 100 million passengers annually by 2019, officials said today.

Before 2025, the airport will be able to handle 72 million passengers, two million tonnes of cargo and mail, and have four runways, according to a plan approved by government last year.

It is planned that the new airport will have seven runways, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Located in southern Beijing's Daxing district, the airport is expected to meet the capital's rising demand for air travel and help balance development in Beijing's southern and northern areas.

Construction on the runway started late last year, and construction on the airport's terminal started in September 2015.

The construction of the new airport started in December 2014 and take about five years to complete.

Currently, Beijing has two airports that serve civil aviation flights - Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Nanyuan Airport.

Beijing Capital International Airport, located in northeastern Beijing, served 83.7 million passengers in 2013 and was listed as the second-busiest airport in the world last year by passengers, behind Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the United States, according to Airports Council International.
