The BJP in West Bengal today hailed the Supreme Court's rejection of the state government's plea for a court-monitored CBI probe in the Saradha chit fund scandal.

"We welcome the Supreme Court's observation on the matter yesterday," state BJP president Rahul Sinha told a press conference here.

The Supreme Court yesterday declined to monitor the CBI probe into the multi-crore Saradha scam, saying it has not made any accusation that the agency was "negligent" in its probe.

The court, which also rejected state government and TMC's allegation against the CBI of selectively leaking information to media about the ongoing probe, however, provided some respite to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the state law minister by refusing to initiate contempt proceedings against them for allegedly obstructing the CBI in its investigation.

"In the Singur case, they (TMC government) did the same thing and pushed the state to an uncertain future," Sinha said.

Meanwhile, actresses Sheena Chakraborty, Sarbari Mukherjee and former captain of the Indian Basketball team Tarak Sarkar besides several former TMC workers joined the party, Sinha announced.
