Bengal burned bright in myriad hues as people today celebrated Diwali by exploding fireworks, lighting up houses and exchanging sweets.

The night sky lit up with dazzling fireworks, though the loudness of some of them put elderly people at unease.

Devotees thronged Kali temples, including the famous ones at Kalighat, Dakshineswar and Tarapith, since early morning.

People in large numbers were seen visiting Kali Puja pandals illuminated with bright lights in the evening.

Houses and shops were decked up with tiny coloured lamps, diyas and plain candles.

Large crowds were seen before major community Kali Puja pandals in areas like Amherst Street and Chetla in the city as well as at Barasat in neighboring North 24-Parganas district.

The police and fire brigade personnel across the city kept a hawk eye on the festivity and on sale of banned firecrackers.
