West Bengal government has been ramping up raw silk production in the state and was targeting a production of 2627 metric tonne in the current fiscal.
"Production of raw silk in 2017-18 was 2577 metric tonne. In the current fiscal, production was expected to be higher by 50 metric tonne over last year," state Agriculture Minister Ashish Banerjee said here today.
The state is also planning to add about 1620 acres of cultivable land under sericulture production in the current fiscal, he said.
In 2017-18, land coverage increase was higher with 1733 acres covering all the four varieties of raw silk.
State agriculture department has tied up with departments such as Panchayat and Rural Development, Paschimanchal Unnanyan Affairs, Uttar Banga Unnanyan Affairs for utilising their resources for plantation projects.
"We are trying to help seri-farmers and entrepreneurs through formation of groups, clusters and relevant mechanisation and credit supports," Banerjee said.
