A state plan of action document aimed at protecting child rights was launched today by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Claiming the initiative as the country's first state-level action plan document, a state child development department release said the document intends to promote survival, protection, participation and overall development of children.

The state plan is aligned with the national priorities of children outlined in the National Policy for Children and National Plan of Action, it said.

Launching the plan at a function to inaugurate the Christmas festival in the city, Banerjee, Archbishop Thomas D'Souza and Bishop Ashok Biswas condemned the massacre of school children in Peshawar and prayed for peace.

Christmas celebrations would usher in peace and joy for all, Banerjee said adding, Park Street would be decorated for the occasion and festivities would held between December 18 and January 2.
