The West Bengal government has decided to beautify and upgrade the 187-year-old Babughat on the banks of the Ganga in the city, West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Bobby Hakim today said.

"We are planning to go in for the beautification and upgradation of Babughat like what was done at the Princep Ghat," Hakim said today.

The deatiled project report has been given to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, in whose area the ghat is situated, he said.

"The state government will provide all the expense of the entire project of beautification of Babughat which is also a heritage spot," he said.

As part of the plan the fountain in the spot would also be made operational, he said.

The ghat was originally known was Baboo Raj Chandra Ghat. Babu or Baboo in Bengali means a gentleman.

The ghat was named after the husband of Rani Rashmoni and zamindar of Janbazar, who built it in 1830, in memory of her late husband. Rashmoni also built the iconic Dakshineswar Temple in the northern part of the city, which was made famous by Paramahansa Rama Krishna and his consort Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda.

It has been encroached upon and the old structure and stairs leading to the river are in various stages of decay.
